“Our work creates both hope and
heartache,
wealth and wilderness"
These
are some of the things people are saying about their working lives.
- Work ‘uses’ the major time of life
- As our wealth increases our mental
health and contentment is being corroded
- Success breeds the question ‘Is
this all there is?’
- The struggle at work drains life of
joy and meaning.
We
believe these issues carry a spiritual dimension and that there are faith
insights to be shared that are vital to our future.
The Work and Spirit programme forms a significant dimension of the city
centre mission being taken up at St Stephen’s.
The programme begins with a series of international speakers, whose provocative talks will be available on this site as an MP3 audio file or as a transcript (click on read more…under each event). We aim to stimulate a high quality conversation about the issues raised on this site and will be inviting several well-known figures to act as guest contributors. Please add your own comments.

Chris Underhill is a serial social entrepreneur. In 1999, he was awarded an MBE in recognition for his work founding and directing Action on Disability and Development, which supports people with physical disabilities in the developing world. That same year, Chris founded BasicNeeds, an international non-profit which enables poor people with mental disorders to satisfy their basic needs and fulfill their basic rights.
As a development expert and a social entrepreneur, Chris brings a fresh voice to the field of global mental health, which has been dominated by psychiatrists. His contribution to the field was endorsed by the World Health Organisation, who invited him to become a founding member of the Global Forum on Community Mental Health. In addition, subsequent to publishing in the Lancet, Chris was asked to lead advocacy on an emerging Movement for Global Mental Health.
Chris Underhill will discuss what motivated him to set up the organisation, the challenges he has faced and the principles and values that underlie the charity’s work with a marginalized group living in poverty. In its first eight years of operation, BasicNeeds has reached over 54,000 people with mental disorders across eight low and middle income countries: India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
